Details — Transportation

Vehicle to Marahau (southern trailhead)

  • Marahau is 18km north of Motueka
  • Marahau is 67km north of Nelson

Most trampers arriving by vehicle travel via Nelson, to Motueka, & finally on to tiny seaside Marahau village. The southern trailhead is a 1km walk from Marahau.

Parking is available at the trailhead. Our information is that your valuables should be secure if you leave them there. Check on arrival for other parking options.

Vehicle to Takaka (near northern trailhead)

  • Takaka is 21km from the Wainui car park
  • Takaka is 32km from Totaranuui car park
  • Takaka is 31km from Awaroa car park

Takaka is the nearest town to the northern trailhead, Wainui.

Normally, hikers do not park at Wainui, having left their vehicle at the start, Marahau.

Takaka, by the way, is a wonderful tourist town.

Bus

Bus transport from Nelson is convenient. You have two options offering similar fares to Marahau, Wainui & Totaranui:

Water Transportation to the Trailhead

Most hikers these days use water taxi rather than personal vehicle or bus. You have plenty of options. Prices are reasonable. And the coastal scenery is terrific.

All boats land at Marahau & Kaiteriteri. Some even depart from Nelson. They stop & pick-up wherever customers wish including Anchorage, Bark Bay & Awaroa.

It is easy to book a boat on arrival in the region. No need to do so in advance.

There are many possible ticket options including unlimited transport on three days within a five-day period.

If you have your own boat, public ramps are located at Kaiteriteri, Marahau, Tarakohe, Tata Beach and Totaranui.
