Accommodation on the Track

There are four DOC huts:

    1. Anchorage
    2. Bark Bay
    3. Awaroa
    4. Whariwharangi

If you want to stay in huts, your route is fixed. You should make a reservation to book huts during the New Zealand summer. The huts book-up quickly in high season, so the sooner you reserve (after July 1 for the following season), the better.

If you tent, not only do you have many more options where to sleep, but no reservation is needed.

There is a two-night maximum stay at each hut and campsite (except Totaranui where one-night is maximum).

A campsite pass may be upgraded to a hut pass if bunk space is available on payment of the difference. This can be arranged with hut wardens after 6pm.

Where should you stay? Check our recommended routes.

As one of New Zealand's Great Walks, you must purchase a Great Walks Pass to hike the Abel Tasman. Costs.

The best known private accommodation is Awaroa Lodge & Cafe. We recommend it. If you cannot afford to stay a night or two, at least stop in at the restaurant for drinks. (We visited Christmas Day.)

The Lodge is a bit of a side trip from the main Track. You need to detour to visit — or you may be able to wade a creek & regain the Track without backtracking. Enquire at the Lodge.

We have not yet visited Torrent Bay Lodge. It would be an interesting alternative to Anchorage hut.

In fact, you might consider this route using only commercial accommodation:

Day 1 — Marahau to Torrent Bay Lodge

Day 2 — Torrent Lodge to Awaroa Lodge

Day 3 — Awaroa Lodge to exit at Totaranui
