Where is the Abel Tasman Track?

In New Zealand, on the northern coast of the south island.

The jumping off point is for many the town of Motueka near Nelson. Getting to the Track is easy. (maps)

The Park is named for Dutch Explorer Abel Janzoon Tasman who arrived December 1642. Four Europeans were killed by Maori. Abel Tasman sailed away without setting foot on land. (The welcome for visitors is much warmer these days.)

Where is the trailhead?

Vehicles have four access points:

  1. Marahau
  2. Awaroa
  3. Totaranui
  4. Wainui

Transportation details.

As these 4 Abel Tasman trailheads are accessible by water taxi too, many hikers take the opportunity of starting and/or ending on the beautiful sea. (maps)

Where should you begin your hike?

  • normally start in Marahau (by boat, bus or vehicle)
  • normally end at Totaranui or Wainui (by boat, bus or vehicle)

There are dozens of excellent routes possible on the Abel Tasman.
