Hut beds are no longer inexpensive, in our opinion. (They do not even have stoves.) The price increase, plus the increase in value of the NZ dollar against other currencies makes those beds pricey. Tent if you can. Pay in advance, for sure, as there are penalties if you pay on-the-spot. DOC offices, Visitor Centres & some hotels can arrange this for you. Cancellation fees apply too. Check the DOC website to get up-to-date prices. A Great Walks hut or campsite pass for the Coast Track should be purchased before starting. Carry it with you. There are separate passes for summer & winter. Huts are basic but comfortable. Tent sites are generally excellent though sometimes crowded with kayakers. We prefer tenting until it rains.
