FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Who should hike the Track?

Everyone. This is one of the best hiking options in New Zealand for families, children & groups.

The Trail is mostly flat & gentle. You frequently have a chance to jump on a water taxi (in case of injury, illness, fatigue, etc.)

Who should NOT hike the Abel Tasman?

  • NOT those with chronic knee, ankle or back injuries.

Can I hike it alone?

Yes. Many do. It's no problem.

There is a good chance you will meet & join up with other hikers.

Be sure to bring an emergency whistle if you do hike solo. In case you sprain an ankle you can rouse help quickly. Never side trip alone.

Should I join an organized tour?

We are independent hikers. This website is designed for those who like to organize their own trip.

But no, it is not necessary to join a tour if you have your own gear and any kind of hiking experience.

If you insist on being guided, you could for NZ$500 (or more!) book a 5-day package with guide where you carry just a day pack. Though there are more options, but check these websites for a sample:
