FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What footwear is best for the Track?

You want to wear what fits you best & what works for you. No blisters is the goal!

On the Abel Tasman we recommend you wear something cool & light; consider trail shoes (often called approach shoes), running shoes or even sturdy walking sandals. Boots are not needed.

Bring a light second pair for wading the surf.

Can I fish on the Abel Tasman Track?

Yes. It is ideal for the angler. Carry your own light gear.

Drop-in to any sport shop in New Zealand to suss the local fishing rules & pickup a fishing licence. Check on restricted areas — i.e. fishing not permitted between Awaroa Head & Bark Bay within the Tonga Island Marine Reserve.

Can I buy food on the Track?

Yes, in 2 spots at least:

  • Awaroa Lodge & Cafe
  • Totaranui Campground (snacks)

Near the Marahau park entrance, the Park Cafe offers a chance to splurge on burgers, milkshakes, etc. before starting your tramp.

Parking at the Trailhead?

Most hikers start at Marahau. The free car park at the start of the track is generally safe — we were advised by Motueka Tourist Info.

If you are using a kayak, water taxi or accommodation that is based in Marahau you are often allowed to leave your vehicle on their property.

There is also a property that charges $5/day for parking on their property.

Are there toilets on the Abel Tasman?

The track is well supplied with outhouse-style loos; at the 4 huts & 21 campgrounds.

Trampers still should carry toilet paper, a lighter, and alcohol gel to disinfect if they happen to get the urge to purge somewhere between toilets.

Accept that you might find yourself shitting in the woods or in the intertidal zone at some point.
