FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What flora & fauna will I see on the Track?

We were disappointed not to see more wildlife. There are too many people about.

Those who opt to cross Separation Point will often see seals.

On the up side, you are certain to spend quality time with sea birds.

Oyster catchers are everywhere & are always entertaining to watch. Look for pukeko near water too.

Sea Kayaking?

It is tempting for a group to hike & kayak this tramp simultaneously, switching paddlers as you go depending on who has sore feet!

Kayaking is super popular here (especially December to February) so prices tend to be higher than elsewhere in NZ. One of the cheaper options (about NZ$110+) is:

  1. guided kayak to Anchorage (overnight)
  2. walk unguided to Onetahuti
  3. water taxi return
