FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)Can I fish Alpamayo?Surprisingly, no. Actually, you can fish but (reportedly) will catch nothing. Too bad. The fishing in the nearby Huayhuash range is excellent in places. Can I buy food on the Trail? No, not really. You might be able to purchase cheese or other basics from farmers as you approach Pomabamba. The trend seen near Machu Picchu of farmers putting up shacks to sell soft drinks & snacks to hikers has not yet come to Alpamayo. Carry enough food to get you through. Are there toilets on Alpamayo? No. You might find a pit toilet or two at the end of the Trek. They are quite common near town. Remember as is the norm in South America few provide toilet paper. Carry your own. And be happy if the paperless toilet has a proper seat. One quirk in the treeless high valleys on this hike is that there are few spots to hide out of sight when you get the urge to purge. Showers? Hot Springs? No showers anywhere en route. We washed up in glacial creeks.
But you can look forward to the interesting public baths (banos thermales) when you get to Pomabamba. If you start in Cashapampa, you can also take advantage of the Banos Huancarhuas (US$.60) close to the start of the trek. What animals will I see?Perhaps we have been unlucky, but we saw only domestic animals on Alpamayo. Horses, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens & llamas. Others report seeing Andean foxes & viscachas. Birds were the highlight for us we did see condors. The smaller raptor the mountain caracara is common. You might see falcons, Andean geese & ducks, hawks, hummingbirds, American kestrels, puna ibis & Andean swifts. |
