Night zero sleep Huaraz (3090m) or Caraz (2270m)
... Caraz is closer to the trailhead. We stayed there
... sleeping in Huaraz is better for those still acclimatizing
... morning bus and / or collectivo to Caraz
... connect by hired vehicle to Cholin (Hualcayan)
Night 1 tent at first signed campsite above Cholin
... stopping here helps you acclimatize & breaks up the 1400m ascent over 2 days
...lunch at lovely Laguna Cullicocha
Night 2 tent wherever you feel like stopping
... you can literally camp anywhere with a water supply
... we camped between the first two passes: Osoruri (4860m) and Los Cedros (4770m) because the altitude was slowing us down
... even better would be to cross Los Cedros & camp on the other side
...lunch at Ruina Pampa
Night 3 tent Laguna Jancarurish
... optional day hike sidetrip to Alpamayo Base Camp & beyond
Night 4 tent Laguna Jancarurish
... via Carhuac (Yanapunta) pass 4640m
Night 5 tent Huillca village (4000m)
... no need to stay in the village, however. We stopped sooner, camping in a lovely valley spot on our own.)
Night 6 tent Janca Pampa (3400m)
... again, we stopped earlier, camping alone at Laguna Sactaycocha
Night 7 sleep in a Pomabamba hostel
... highlight of town are the public thermal baths. Enjoy!
... bus next morning to Yungay
... this is a fantastic drive through some of the best mountain scenery in the world!
Night 8 sleep Yungay or Huaraz
... it takes all day to get out from Pomabamba. We did not arrive in Huaraz until late evening
