Absolutely. Kids as young as age-7 thrive on this hike if they have previous overnight hiking experience.
Should I be worried about bears?
Bears are a concern in the Canadian Rockies. Bears kill someone about once every 3 years. Still, it is quite unlikely you will see one on this hike.
Our advice:
- if possible, do not hike alone, especially at dawn or dusk
- shout before you turn blind corners (Yo Bear!)
- hang food and other smellies away from the tent
- be alert to signs of a bear kill on the trail ahead
On day hike sidetrips, break camp & hang your packs & food before walking away. An unattended gear is vulnerable to animals.
Last bit of veteran advice always hike with someone you can outrun.

Should I do other hikes instead?
No, this is the best hike in the Canadian Rockies for the majority of hikers. Access is easy. The vistas unending.
But if you want to do more hikes, we recommend:
- Lake OHara (bus access, gorgeous day hiking)
- Mt. Robson (waterfalls, glaciers, alpine meadows)
- Skyline Trail (difficult, stunning Jasper ridge walk)
Should I hike Glacier instead?
No.
A more difficult but similarly fantastic hike is the Highline Trail / Ptarmigan Tunnel loop (North Circle) in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. The trailhead in Waterton is less than 4 hours drive from Banff.
You might hike Glacier National Park on the same vacation check our Glacier website for details.
