Sunshine to Mt. Assiniboine, hiking Canada

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

When should I hike?

The best time to hike is July through mid-September.

The later the better, to avoid bugs. Snow may last on the trail into July.

We typically hike around August 1st and, year-after-year, get generally good weather.

Should I hike off-season?

You would assume not.

But, in fact, Assiniboine is excellent in winter. Helicopter up and bring cross country skis.

In the shoulder season, especially late September through October, you might be able to day hike Assiniboine. Bring skis and hiking boots.

What is the weather like?

Weather in the Rockies is notoriously fickle. Be prepared for rain, sleet, hail — or temperatures up to 30°C (86°F)!

Bring clothing to keep you warm at -10°C (14°F) to be on the safe side. Certainly you might have mornings below freezing.

Precipitation levels are actually quite low in July and August — less than 6cm (2in) / month. Please inform the young soaked hiker in the photo below that he need not worry about a lot of rain.
