Sunshine to Mt. Assiniboine, hiking Canada

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How many days are needed?

We recommend 4-6 nights in the tent, depending on your exact itinerary. (Taking the helicopter normally saves you 1 night.)

Even better would be to bring food for an extra day — just in case you want to add another side trip. There are some very tempting options!

Helicopter to Assiniboine?

One of our 2 recommended route is heli-hiking: fly up from Mt. Shark trailhead, taking the bus down from Sunshine Village ski resort.

This saves energy — and saves you days for the high alpine.

Interested? Details.

If you decide against taking the helicopter, the other good itinerary is to bus up to Sunshine, hike down to Mt. Shark.

What guidebooks do you recommend?

Altitude Superguide Classic Hikes in the Canadian Rockies is our favourite hiking guide, by far. Look for the ring binder edition — carry just those pages you need in an included plastic sleeve. This is the format all hiking guides should use.

Consider too Lonely Planet Banff, Jasper & Glacier National Parks, our favourite general travel guide: travel, accommodation, food, etc.

Sunshine to Assiniboine is not a complex hike. Almost any guidebook will get you through. There are dozens of choices including gotta hike BC, by Sky and Lake Nomad (Kathy & Craig Copeland). Similar but better is Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies (2004) by the same authors. We love the light-hearted, opinionated style. But the format (no maps, for example) is far inferior to the Altitude guide.

Canadian Rockies Trail Guide, 7th ed, 2000, by Patton & Robinson is still the beloved standard for many.

Canadian Rockies Access Guide 4th ed, by John Dodd, Gail Helgason has been called the best of the bunch by GemTrek.

Other recommended books?

There are many superb books on the Rockies including:

Our hiking bible, the Handbook of the Canadian Rockies, by Ben Gadd. The definitive Field Guide on flowers, plants, animals, insects, birds, fish, geology & history, etc.

But we also love Lone Pine Field Guides, including:

Mammals of the Rocky Mountains, by Pattie, Fisher & Hartson

Plants of the Rocky Mountains, by Kershaw, Pojar & MacKinnon

High Summer: Backpacking the Canadian Rockies, by Chris Townsend — hiking God. He first walked the Canadian continental divide which includes Assiniboine & Sunshine.

The Canadian Rockies, 2005, by photographer Douglas Leighton.

Ridgewalks in the Canadian Rockies, by Mike Potter

Great Lodges of the Canadian Rockies, 1999.

How To Photograph The Canadian Rockies and Dances with Light by Darwin Wiggett.

Recommended is Animal Tracks of Western Canada by Joanne Barwise.

Amazon recommended Banff hiking books: a constantly updating list based on popularity & reader reviews. Purchasing from Amazon helps support this site — and you cannot beat Amazon prices.

Scare yourself silly with stories of Bear attacks: Amazon recommended books on Grizzly Bears.

Popular is Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance, by Herrero. And Bears by Kevin Van Tighem.

Recommended is Raven’s End by Ben Gadd.

Switchbacks: True Stories from the Canadian Rockies by Sid Marty.

Mountain Madness: An Historical Miscellany by Cavell & Whyte.

You can certainly purchase any of these books — and more — in Banff. E-mail recommendations for other useful books.

What are the best Assiniboine websites?

There are surprisingly few useful websites on hiking to Assiniboine.

We’ve linked to many throughout our site, listing the best under Links.

What is the best map?

GemTrek Banff National Park and Mount Assiniboine 1:1000,000 is our favourite. But, actually, no topographical map is necessary. The route is well-signed and straight-forward.
