Why?

      Details

    Water

Much of the Ausangate Circuit is grazing land. You must treat water for:

    • protozoans
    • bacteria
    • viruses

You have a choice of water treatment methods:

    • boiling
    • chemical disinfection
    • filters
    • purifiers

We recommend you take a good purifier — the Katadyn is a favourite though we've had good luck with many other units.

Make sure your purifier is well maintained. They need frequent cleaning.

    Campsites

There are no official campsites on the Ausangate Circuit. It is your pleasure to camp anywhere you like. But if you choose to camp near herders, ask permission.

There is no cost for camping.

Our recommended Route does not even specify where we think you should stop for the night. There were no campsites we felt were must-stops.

E-mail us with any campsites you recommend .

    Cooking

All cooking should be done on a lightweight camping stove. Bring a back-up stove if possible, in case your primary stove breaks down.

Meals should be as simple & quick-cooking as possible. Instant mashed potatoes are a staple in South America. We rehydrate in soup rather than water.

look for the ideal campsite: flat with morning sunlight
