Why?

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Can I hike it alone?

Yes. But it is not recommended.

Far better to hook up with other hikers at South American Explorers in Cuzco.

Be sure to bring an emergency whistle if you do hike solo. You might alert help if you sprain an ankle. But realize there are very few people to rush to your aid on the backside of the mountain.

And there are many different routes. Other hikers may be hundreds of metres higher or lower than you.

Should I join an organized tour? Hire a guide?

We are independent hikers. This website is designed for those who like to organize their own trip.

But no, it is not necessary to join a tour if you have multi-day hiking experience. It is not all that complicated to hike around a mountain.

We have seen companies offering different versions of the Ausangate Circuit for US$200 / person and up. Be cautious with whom you go. Some companies are very poor. Some do not deliver what they promise. Much depends on which guide / arriero you happen to get.

Get a strong, recent recommendation from South American Explorers before you put down any cash.

Your odds of getting a reliable arriero who actually knows the route are much greater if you hire one in Tinqui than in Cuzco.

Can I bring children?

It is not recommended.

What if they needed evacuated due to altitude sickness?

This hike is too high & remote for kids, we feel.

Should I hike Inca Trail instead?

We are not fans of the Inca Trail.

Instead you should hike to Machu Picchu on the Salcantay Trek or one of the other alternatives.

Oft heard complaints about the Inca Trail:

  • too expensive (US$220+ in 2005)
  • too crowded
  • over-regulated
  • independent hiking not allowed
  • requires 30 day advance booking
  • arrives at Machu Picchu too late to see the site empty of tourists

The 30 day advance requirement is not firm. If you go through a Cuzco tour agency, you might get a place in 7 - 14 days.

Most hikers enjoy the Inca Trail — the most popular hike in South America — despite the restrictions.

The Inca Trail is safer & has less risk of altitude sickness. (Inca Trail high point is 4200m, Ausangate 5165m.)

If you do hike the Inca Trail, check Danbury’s guidebook, The Inca Trail, Cusco & Machu Picchu.

Ausangate hikers are happier. There are no Inca ruins on the Circuit, but as a wilderness hike Ausangate is far superior.
