Why?

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How many days are needed to hike Ausangate?

Our recommended Route is a minimum of 4 nights tenting on the Trek. Bring enough food for 5 nights, just in case the altitude delays you.

What guidebooks do you recommend?

Lonely Planet Trekking in the Central Andes. LP is our favourite hiking guide, by far. Be sure to get the most recent edition as it is frequently updated.

Consider too Lonely Planet Healthy Travel Central & South America.

We strongly recommend you Lonely Planet to plan your trip and carry it for details on flora, fauna, history, etc.

Other guidebooks with information on this trek:

You also need a general travel guide — check our Details page for advice.

Other recommended books?

We have not found much on Ausangate, but there are hundreds of books on Machu Picchu. Browse the book shops when you get to Cuzco for a souvenir book which also serves as a guidebook for touring the ruins.

Also:

The Lost City of the Incas, by Hiram Bingham who rediscoverd the ruins.

The Inca Trail, Cuzco & Machu Picchu, by Richard Danbury. Even those not hiking the Inca Trail like this compact guide.

White Rock, by Hugh Thompson. Explorer’s adventures seeking Inca sites.

Monuments of the Incas, by John Hemming & Edward Raney. Black & white photos.

Exploring Cusco, by Peter Frost.

What are the best Ausangate websites?

There are surprisingly few useful websites on the Ausangate Circuit. But thousands for the Inca Trail.

We’ve linked to various sites throughout & listed the most useful under Links.

What is the best map?

IGN 1:100,000 Ocongate (sheet 28-t) is the usual recommendation.

We prefer the Cordillera Vilcanota Tinqui-Auzangate 1:50,000 (1985) hiking map produced by South American Explorers.

Compare & buy one or the other from South American Explorers Club Cuzco office when you get there.

Both maps are flawed & out-of-date. You also need the simple but current map in Lonely Planet Trekking in the Central Andes.
