Unconfirmed trip report at South American Explorers. Robbery Sept 2004 at a campsite just above Upus on western part of loop. People and dogs with guns late at night. Couple paid US$60 to make them go away. Recommended to camp either before or after Upus. Camp close together with other hikers if you can. Or camp out of sight of the trail.

Ausangate is not policed. You are on your own. If this makes you uncomfortable, perhaps the Inca Trail is a better bet.

   Altitude sickness is by far your greatest concern.
  • mild symptoms are common: headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, difficulty sleeping
  • severe symptoms: breathlessness, cough, lack of coordination, & worse
  • most hikers get some symptoms above 2500m
  • acclimatizing 2-3 days for each 1000m gain helps a lot
  • Cuzco is at 3326m
  • Acute Mountain Sickness <details> can be fatal
  • Salcantay Pass is 4700m! (15,420 ft)
  • drug treatment is controversial <details>
  • better is to immediately descend
  • fortunately the trail drops quickly to Aguas Calientes (2000m)
