FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
What does it cost to hike the Queen Charlotte Track?
It is quite an inexpensive tramp. Excellent value for what you get. There is no Trail Permit or anything of that sort required.
In October 2002 (prices have gone up, of course) our approximate costs were:
- NZ$58 water taxi
- NZ$75 backpacker bed ($25 / night x 3 nights)
Grand total NZ$123 if you stay in backpacker (dorm) beds which we recommend. Most are privately run & far more interesting than the expensive DOC huts on the official Great Walks.
Bring cash with you on the hike as you may want to
- buy food & drink at restaurants
- buy food at shops
- send e-mail at Ponga
- rent a kayak or mountain bike
- etc.
There are frequent opportunities to spend money.
The least expensive and least crowded way to do the Queen Charlotte is to tent. There is a small charge at the campsites based on payment by the honour system. No campsite reservations are needed.
