FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the best map?

We recommend you wait until you get to Picton where you will be given several different free hand drawn maps of the Track — compare several of these as you tramp. No topo is needed for the QCT. More map information.

Do hikers ever get lost?

No. You don't need a compass.

Will a cell phone work on the Queen Charlotte?

No, not reliably.

There are many landline phones en route.

To report serious emergencies or hazards call the New Zealand emergency number: 111

What special gear should I bring?

  • A sun hat is essential. Many get sunburned on the long tramping days.
  • large plastic bag liners for your pack (in case of rain)
  • insect repellent may be needed for sandflies (we saw none in October, however)
  • face and lip protection from sun and wind
  • swim suit
  • small binoculars or monocular (for bird identification, etc.)
  • disinfectant alcohol gel

We strongly recommend disinfectant gel (sometimes called instant hand sanitizer) which you use to clean your hands before snack breaks & after toilet stops in the woods. Alcohol gel is essential hiking gear.

Double-bag everything you want to keep dry. Expect a very wet environment — just in case.
