FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What flora & fauna will I see on the Trail?

We were disappointed not to see more wildlife. We saw no sign of wild pig or even possum (which are being poisoned throughout the country).

Aside from farm animals, you are only certain to see birds. Our favourite is the goofy, curious Weka.

Weka are generally nocturnal — but the chance to check-out tourists will have them chasing after you.

Other lovely birds include those you will see wading in the section close to Anakiwa.

Other creatures you may see:
  • tui (songbird)
  • bellbird (songbird)
  • woodpigeons
  • waxeyes
  • gannets
  • shearwaters
  • oyster catchers
  • shags

Flora:

  • native beech
  • kamahi
  • rimu
  • nikau palms
  • manuka
  • kanuka
  • ferns
  • flowering orchids

Other things to do near the Queen Charlotte?

  • Abel Tasman Track
  • Heaphy Track
  • Edwin Fox (historic teak ship in Picton)
  • Picton Museum
  • Day hikes out of Picton
    • Snout Walkway (3 hours, views of Queen Charlotte Sound)
    • Tirohanga Walkway (90 minutes, views of Picton and the Sounds)
