Our favourite general travel guidebooks to South America are Lonely Planet & Footprint (formerly the South American Handbook). LP has better maps. Footprint is updated more often. Both are very good.

Most backpackers carry one or the other. But there are many other Travel Peru guidebook options.

But be sure you get the most recent edition of whichever you choose.

Flying to Peru

Lima is the main gateway city for Peru. Gladly this is one of the least expensive destinations for foreign travellers.

Peru welcomes tourists & arrival is hassle free. Check how many days you get on your travel visa.

Unfortunately Lima is one of the least popular tourist cities in South America; dry, congested & polluted.

We recommend you book your flight connection Lima to Cuzco avoiding the necessity of staying over in Lima which is close to sea level. The sooner you get to Cuzco (3326m), the sooner you start acclimatizing to altitude.

Air fare Cuzco <> Lima goes as low as US$50, but budget at least US$80.

If you will be travelling to Bolivia, know that bus service La Paz, Bolivia <> Cuzco is convenient.

Flying in Peru

Reminder: Airlines do not allow you to transport camping fuel. Check with the airline to see if they allow empty fuel containers.

Flying is a good option in Peru as land transport can be slow in the mountains. A good starting point for domestic flight options is the TraficoPeru.com website.

Getting a ticket can be time consuming in South America. A good travel agent is sometimes faster than you going directly to the airline office.

Other factors to consider:

fares are higher during high tourist peaks

students with international cards often get a discount

Monday through Thursday fares sometimes discounted
