Why?

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How many days are needed to hike Choquequirao?

We recommend 3 different Routes, 4-7 nights, or more.

The most popular is to the ruins of Choquequirao and back (in & out of Cachora) in 4 days, 4 nights.

What guidebooks do you recommend?

Lonely Planet Trekking in the Central Andes. LP is our favourite hiking guide, by far. Unfortunately it does not include this trek.

As of this writing there are no trekking guides we can recommend for hiking past the ruins. The best you can do is to purchase a small booklet from South American Explorers called the ALTERNATIVE INCA TRAILS INFORMATION PACKET.

You also need a general travel guide — check our Details page for advice.

Other recommended books?

There are hundreds of books on Machu Picchu. Browse the book shops when you get to Cuzco for a souvenir book which also serves as a guidebook for touring the ruins.

Also:

Inca Choqek´iraw, Vincent Lee

Forgotten Vilcabamba, Vincent Lee

The Lost City of the Incas, by Hiram Bingham who rediscoverd the ruins.

The Inca Trail, Cuzco & Machu Picchu, by Richard Danbury. Even those not hiking the Inca Trail like this compact guide.

White Rock, by Hugh Thompson. Explorer’s adventures seeking Inca sites.

Monuments of the Incas, by John Hemming & Edward Raney. Black & white photos.

Exploring Cusco, by Peter Frost. A legend of the region, Frost updated in 1999.

What are the best Choquequirao websites?

There are few useful websites on Choquequirao. But thousands for the Inca Trail.

We’ve linked to various sites throughout & listed the best under Links.

What is the best map?

We used a collection of free, hand-drawn maps we collected from trekking agencies in Cuzco. There is no excellent map we can recommend, so far.

IGN 1:100,000 Machupicchu (sheet 2344, 27q) covers most of these treks.

Check at South American Explorers Club Cuzco office when you get there to see if something new has become available.
