Note: This is the Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu you can do guided or independently
NOT the much more famous Inca Trail which requires a guide.

Flight prices Lima-Cusco have gone up to $80-$110 one way.

Machu Picchu no longer sells entrance tickets at the gate. Buy tickets in town.

How to
use this
web site?

one of the best hikes in the world

At a glance:

  • this site helps independent hikers organize
  • new alternative to the Inca Trail
  • Choquequirao is a remote ruined Inca city 30km from Cachora, the trailhead
  • restoration & cleaning of the site is frantic at times
  • access only by foot so it is not (yet) crowded
  • best route is Cachora to Choquequirao, and on to Machu Picchu
  • altitude is not a concern if you go only to the ruins
  • the hikes beyond Choquequirao climb above 4600m so altitude sickness is a real risk
  • several recommended itineraries from 4-7 nights in the tent, or longer
  • muddy trails with huge vertical sections
  • also spelled Choquequiraw & Choquequirau
  • our NEW site: besthike.com Choquequirau

The ultimate itinerary takes you to both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu on the same adventure.

Machu Picchu is one of National Geographic's 50 places to visit in your lifetime. Some hikers like Choquequirao even better though it is not nearly so well known.

Choquequirao is much different than Machu Picchu: different stone, different architecture including two-story structures, ritual baths, gargantuan agricultural terraces. Wow!

Hundreds of hikers a day sign on for the guided Inca Trail. But there is still time to be one of the pioneer hikers on this trek. The sooner you get to Choquequirao, the better.

It is easy to hire a guide or arriero (mule driver) & burros in the trailhead town of Cachora. And we recommend you do.

Peru is the best country in South America for hikers. Wonderful mountain access, spectacular festivals, & colourful culture. Historically alive, both Incan & colonial legacies are fascinating.

Cuzco, the Capital of the Incas, the naval of the Earth, is the jumping off point for Choquequirao & Machu Picchu.
