Local information is important. The best source of advice is hikers who have recently hiked Colca Canyon.
First stop in Cuzco or Lima should be the South American Explorers Club. Members have full access to facilities and trip reports, but non-members are still helped.
See if you can find someone through SAE who has recently done this hike.
