When should I hike Glacier?
The best time to hike is mid-July through mid-September.
The high passes can be closed by snow before or after those dates (or any month, for that matter). Check with Park Headquarters as the start date of your hike approaches: (406) 888-7800
Trail Status and Maintenance Reports web page is updated daily.
Should I hike off-season?
There is no one to stop you trying any month. The Park Service does not shut down trails due to snow but they may not issue you a Backcountry Permit if they feel hiking is too dangerous.
In the off-season, snow on the high passes may force you to turn back.
What is the weather like?
Go to the Sierra Nevadas if you want good weather!
Be prepared for near freezing temperatures & high winds. Snow drifts may make the North Circuit impassable well into July.
The Rockies do not get many days of calm, sunny weather. But do not be surprised if a good day reaches 32°C (90F).
Summer highs average about 21°C (70F), lows below freezing.
Bring enough clothing layers to be on the safe side. Your sleeping bag should be rated to -5°C (23) as as well.
