Recommended Route
There are many ways to hike Glacier area but the best 2 options are:
1) Highline Trail / Ptarmigan Tunnel, North Circle
- 104km (65miles) plus side trips (based on our backcountry permit distances)
- recommended 7 days, 6 nights minimum
- start in Many Glacier, Waterton (or Logan Pass)
- sidetrips recommended: Swiftcurrent Lookout, Glacier Overlook, Ahern Pass, Sue Lake Overlook, Kootenai Lake & Mokowanis Lake
- for a detailed 6 night hiking itinerary click here
2) Many Glacier <> Waterton via Highline
- 67km (41.7 miles) plus side trips (based on our backcountry permit distances)
- recommended 4 days, 3 nights minimum
- shuttle bus available to return you to your start, if needed
- sidetrips recommended: Swiftcurrent Lookout, Glacier Overlook, Ahern Pass, Sue Lake Overlook, Kootenai Lake
- this itinerary misses Stoney Indian Lake, Mokowanis Lake & the spectacular climb to Ptarmigan Tunnel. Do the North Circle (option #1) if you can.
- for a detailed 3 night hiking itinerary click here
The entire North Circle is excellent but we feel the Highline Trail is the best part.
Day hiking is a good option in Glacier too except that it is impossible to day hike Highline. Base yourself out of Many Glacier & take the hiker's shuttle to various trailheads around the park.
