Details for Organizing the Hike
You have a choice of water treatment methods:
On Huayhuash we recommend you take a good purifier the Katadyn is a favourite though we've had good luck with many other units. After all, weight is not an issue if you have pack animals. Make sure your ceramic purifier is well maintained. They need frequent cleaning. If you hire an arriero or guide, he will normally choose where you will camp. Feed for the animals is the most important criteria. Good fishing spots are popular. And your arriero may have family & friends along the Circuit on whom you can rely. If you choose to camp near people, ask permission first. Some of the most popular sites charge a small fee / hiker. You need some cash for this. Our recommended route does specify where we think you could stop each night. E-mail us with any favourite campsite suggestions. We cooked on a lightweight modern camp stoves, but most groups rent a heavy gas stove which cooks much more quickly. You may need an extra animal to carry the bloody thing. Fuel for almost any stove is available in Huaraz. On Huayhuash we carried heavy, fresh food for a change on a hike. (Why not? We had pack animals.) Our vegetables lasted 11 days. We caught fish 4 days on the Huayhuash. Bring the fixings to cook up your trout the way you like it.
