It would be a mistake to hike Huayhuash without compass & the best possible map you can get.

We had guidebook & map yet still got lost 4 of 11 days. (It is easy to get confused once you leave the pack animal route.) Our arriero was out looking for us in the late afternoon more than once.

Cordillera Huayhuash Peru, 2004, 2nd Edition is the best map. It shows the major hiking routes.

Buy it at Cafe Andino when you get to Huaraz. Or, if you want to get your hands on it for planning in advance of your trip, here is the information from the publisher:
