Canada rebounds to upstage France in Montréal
MONTREAL- Kyle Shewfelt of Calgary won gold medals on floor and vault Sunday as Canada won four of the six individual finals to conclude a Canada-France mens gymnastics dual meet.
In addition to Shewfelts wins, Alexander Jeltkov of Montreal was first on high bar and David Kikuchi of Falls River, N.S., prevailed on pommel horse.
We knew that Kyle and I could win but Davids performance on pommel horse was a pleasant surprise, said Jeltkov, who was also second on floor and third on pommel horse. Its very satisfying to be that close to the French. Im pleased with my performance because it was very competitive....
The gymnasts from both countries used the meet to polish their routines for the world championships later this summer. The Canadian team will be finalized in mid-July following a training camp. Eight gymnasts are contending for those six spots.
At this time I think Ill make the team but Im not in top shape and I have a lot of work to do, said Jeltkov.
On Saturday, France defeated Canada in the team event.
