Friday, July 26, 2002 - Gymnastics Canada Canadian Men Claim the Silver Medal in Team Competition, Kikuchi and Jeltkov qualify to the All Around Finals Canada's veteran team of Richard Ikeda, David Kikuchi, Kyle Shewfelt, Grant Golding and Alexander Jeltkov have taken the silver medal in the team competition, trailing England by 0.725 scoring 161.35. England retained their Commonwealth Games title scoring 162.075. Australia took the bronze with 159.10. More information on the results will be posted as they become available. 1 England 162.075 David Kikuchi was 3rd All Around in the qualification competition, with Alexander Jeltkov following closely in 4th position. Both athletes will move on to the All Around final on Sunday afternoon. "Our team performed at their best. We had very good preparation and it showed," said Edouard Iarov, National Team Coach. "Everyone was ready and we achieved the goals we had set out to perform." The team started the competition on Rings with a strong performance, although the scores were lower than expected. Everyone hit their routines. "We had only one fall out of all six events, and it didn't count for the team score. This was a great competition for everyone and we are very pleased." For the spectators this was a great competition, with both England and Canada performing well. The judging was tough, and it was a close competition between England and Canada all the way, but England certainly had the home team advantage, with a sold out crowd supporting their performances. |
