Where is the Milford Track?

Head for the wet west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The Milford Sound is the most famous destination in Fiordland National Park, the largest in the country.

Fiordland National Park is part of the Te Wahipounamu Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Where is the trailhead?

The Milford starts and ends with boat trips. (Maps)

  • start at Glade Wharf (Lake Te Anau)
  • end at Sandfly Point (Milford Sound)

The jumping off point for the Milford is the town of Te Anau which offers anything you might need for the hike.

You finish the Milford Track at the town of Milford Sound.

How do I get there?

The town of Te Anau is a bit remote though you have many transportation options. Public transportation for hikers in New Zealand is very convenient.

To get to the Milford Track you must first get to New Zealand. (A high percentage of Milford hikers are from overseas.)

Next you'll travel to the town of Te Anau. (Transport details)

Finally you'll travel to Te Anau Downs, about 30km from Te Anau where you board a boat which delivers you to Glade Wharf at the end of Lake Te Anau.

Expect fantastic scenery by public transport or personal vehicle en route to the start of the Milford.
