FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do I get a Permit?

First check for the dates you want on the DOC website, then make a reservation as early as possible:

new » on-line Milford Track availability & reservations.

new » Trekwatch.net Track availability & forums.
Try this service if you cannot get the dates you want.

Here are some considerations:

  • bookings essential between end of October & end of April
  • book by phone, snail-mail, fax, or on-line
  • huts not staffed nor maintained in off-season (no booking required)
  • bookings open 1st of July for the next season
  • confirmation letter will be sent to you by post or e-mail. Present the letter at the Te Anau Great Walks Booking Desk by 9am for morning transport departures or 11am for afternoon departures to collect your accommodation & transport passes
  • passes will not be sent by post. Passes not collected by 11am may be sold to standby walkers
  • for booking purposes children are classified as 14 years and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Permits for only 40 independent hikers / day are available during the New Zealand summer season.

Reserve July 1st if possible for the following season as reservations are made starting early July. Mark this on your calendar as a reminder.

To book a permit to hike the Milford, contact the Great Walks Booking Desk at Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre in Te Anau:

    • telephone office hours 7 days / week (New Zealand) 03 249-8514, or ...
    • fax (New Zealand) 03 249-8515, or ...
    • e-mail greatwalksbooking@doc.govt.nz, or ...
    • mail to:

    Great Walks Bookings Office
    Department of Conservation
    Lakefront Drive
    PO Box 29
    Te Anau
    New Zealand

Getting a Permit to hike the Milford at the time you want can be difficult. This is the only hassle in planning the hike.

  • There is only a slight chance to get a coveted last-minute permit. And only if you happen to be the next hiker standing in line in Te Anau. (It happened to us!)

During the winter a reservation is not needed though the huts are not manned, fuel not available, and the Track often dangerous. Winter tramping of the Milford is for expert hikers only.

If you cannot get an independent permit, and you are flush with cash, consider going as a guided hiker. Check the guided website for details.
