FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Who should hike the Milford?

Reasonably fit hikers with proper gear & some wilderness hiking experience. It is a surprisingly easy hike if the weather is decent. There is only 1 long day — some find it exhausting! — as you cross the high pass.

Children under age 10 are not encouraged.

Most Milford hikers are non-Kiwis. You will hike with Americans, Germans, & people from the UK for sure. It is a very international group.

The average age is older than you might expect. Many hikers have grey hair – Silverback-packers. Hiking the Milford is a life goal for many around the world.

Who should NOT hike the Milford?

Not those with chronic knee, ankle or back injuries!

On the guided tour, hikers age 70 or older are asked to consult a medical practitioner before signing-up. Some are asked to provide a medical certificate saying they are fit to go. This is a good guideline for independents too.

The Milford is not recommended for physically challenged hikers. There are rugged, steep, muddy sections.

What's the most difficult section?

Most agree that the descent from Mackinnon Pass is the worst — an 870m drop over 7km. It is far more demanding than the zigzag ascent. Check the DOC profile map.
