FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How long is the Milford?

A trail runner may take less than 6 hours to complete the Track, but 17 hours is average for the rest of us.

An easy hike for experienced trampers, the Milford is 54 km (33.5 miles) from Glade House to Sandfly Point via the Mackinnon Pass; about 17 hours total walking.

Almost everyone makes the Sutherland Falls side trip — add about 3 hours return for that.

You walk only an hour or two on the first day.

How many days are needed to hike the Milford?

A sore point, during the summer season, every hiker must finish the Track in 4 days, 3 nights regardless of the weather. This hike is completely restricted:

  • All hikers must stay in the DOC (Department of Conservation) huts:
  • No tenting allowed
  • hike one direction only

Some have sprinted the last 2 days in 1 day. We cannot imagine any good reason to do so, however.

Check our Routes page.

How good are the huts?

Basic, but roomy & comfortable. Beds for 40 on mattresses. Cold running water, gas cookers, heating, lighting — and flush toilets! No pots, pans or utensils — bring your own. They are well maintained and far above average by New Zealand standards.

DOC staff have radio contact with Te Anau.

What guidebooks do you recommend?

Lonely Planet Tramping in New Zealand by Jim DuFresne is our favourite hiking guidebook, by far. Be sure to get the most recent edition as it is frequently updated.

Lonely Planet New Zealand is our favourite general guidebook. It has great maps & is easy to use. But there are at least a dozen similar alternatives.

Our Milford Track recommendations:

Coffee table photo books:

  • Milford Track Adventure by Philip Holden, 1999

Actually, no guidebook is needed — but bringing one makes the Tramp more interesting. They also make great souvenirs of your trip.

The Lonely Planet hiking guide is the only essential book, we feel. Look for more Milford Track books in New Zealand.

What are the best Milford websites?

There are dozens of good Milford websites & hundreds that are useless. We’ve linked to many throughout & highlighted some of the best under Links.

Don't miss the DOC (Department of Conservation) official Milford web page. That's the best jump after this site.
