The 1:75,000 Trackmaps No 335-01 (Milford Track) though no map is needed.

Online maps.

Will a cell phone work on the Milford?

No, not so far as we have heard. Hut wardens have a radio in case of emergency.

Should I bring a GPS?

No, you don’t need one on the Milford.

What special gear should I bring on the Milford?

All hikers must carry sleeping bags, cooking gear, and all food. Stoves and mattresses are provided, but not pillows.

A sun hat is essential as the walk faces north into the sun for a good portion.

  • pots, cups, pans and/or cutlery
  • large plastic bag liner for your pack (or waterproof each item individually)
  • socks and thin gloves for evenings at the huts help deter sandflies
  • face and lip protection from sun and wind
  • insect repellent
  • swim suit
  • small binoculars or monocular (for bird identification, etc.)

Check our recommended gear checklist to see if you have remembered everything.

We strongly recommend disinfectant gel (sometimes called instant hand sanitizer) which you use to clean your hands before snack breaks & after toilet stops. Alcohol gel is essential hiking gear.

Double-bag everything you want to keep dry. Expect a very wet environment.
