FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What wildlife will I see on the Trail?

The most interesting wildlife on the Track is bird life:

Kea. The most photographed bird on the Milford. Fearless, almost tame, this is a cheeky bird which will steal your lunch then pick your pocket faster than a lawyer. Sometimes known as a flying monkey. The cry is keeea ... keeeaa ... keeeeaaa.

Paradise ducks are colourful characters. They mate for life and are almost always seen as a couple together — unless they are raising a brood of fast-growing ducklings. They are very protective of their young driving away any other ducks in the area.

Other common attractions include Bellbirds, Fantails, Robins, Canada Geese, Weka, Tomtits, Grey Warblers, and Rifleman. Kaka, (re-introduced) Brown kiwi, and Morepork can often be heard at night.

In the clear river pools you will see definitely see trout and perhaps eels.

At Clinton Hut you may well hear Kiwis at night — they are there as part of a research experiment. One of the hut wardens saw one in the very early morning.

You need a good zoom lens or binoculars on this hike.

Once you get to Milford Sound you may see seals en route to the landing.
