FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Other things to do near the Milford Track?

Some hardcore hikers book the Routeburn Track immediately after the Milford Track. Routeburn was named one of the top ten hikes in the world by National Geographic Adventure Magazine. One of the Routeburn trailheads (The Divide) is on the bus route back to Te Anau. If you are interested, we recommend you sleep 3 nights on the Milford, 1 night in Milford Sound townsite, and 2 nights on the Routeburn; total of 7 days, 6 nights starting in Te Anau, finishing near Glenorchy near Queenstown. This is a serious hiking week! Inquire at the booking office how best to do both hikes in one week.

Almost everyone finishing the Track books on to a Milford Sound cruise. (Enquire when you make your booking to hike.) Over 400,000 / year make the pilgrimage to the Sound and few leave disappointed.

There are a number of choices of cruise ships varying slightly in price. Transport off the Track is timed to allow you to take a cruise and still get back to civilization the same day. Very convenient.

The cruises are popular — but even better is the half-day kayak tour. Kayak photos. If you want to kayak, you will probably want to stay one night in Milford. Accommodation is limited there so you would need to organize kayaking and accommodation in advance. Check our details page for this.
