Not much chance. What is more straight-forward than climbing a volcano?
And the trail out is not unclear, so long as you have the Lonely Planet trek description.

No, GPS is not needed for this hike.
What special gear should I bring?

We recommend disinfectant gel (sometimes called instant hand sanitizer) which you use to clean your hands before snack breaks & after toilet stops. Alcohol gel is essential hiking gear. You can buy it in Peru but it is difficult to find.
Stove fuel for almost any stove system can be purchased in Cuzco & Arequipa. Do not fly with it, obviously.
