Why?
Safety & Staying Healthy

Is there scorpion risk?

We looked under rocks at the base camp. Saw none.

Zip your tent anyways. Keep all your gear inside.

Check inside your shoes before you put them on.

Storing food safely

At night you should cache food out of reach of animals, including mice (we saw one at base camp). We keep our food in the tent, but sealed in an air tight kayak bag.

Are there any dangerous snakes?

None we are aware of.

And we saw no snake tracks.

Blisters?

Wear comfortable, broken-in footwear. If you feel a hot spot, stop & take off your boots.

Wicking inner socks may help prevent blisters.

Bring Leukoplast or Elastoplast bandages, duct tape & any other blister first aid products you like, just in case.

If you do get a blister, using a sterile needle, prick the blister a few times. Drain without touching the fluid or holes. Seal with liquid Betadine and, when dry, place some tape over it. We usually use duct tape — it's inexpensive and seems to stay as well as anything else.

Insect Bites & Stings? Thorns?

No worries. Nothing can live on Misti!

Be sure you are not stuck with cactus needles.
