One of the Air Nootka planes.
Many Nootka hikers fly in to the trailhead at Louie Lagoon on a small float plane. There are other flight options, but Air Nootka is the best.

What is the Uchuck III ferry?

Uchuck III
Almost every Nootka hiker takes a trip on the Uchuck, an American minesweeper built in 1942, later converted to freighter / passenger ferry. Its a lot of fun to take a trip on the speedy Uchuck. Good coffee shop, too.
This ship round-trips from Gold River to Friendly Cove, Nootka Island on Wednesdays & Saturdays during the summer, from about July 4th to September 15th. Check the Uchuck web site for fares and details. If you take the Uchuck, youll need to plan your hiking itinerary around the days they stop at Friendly Cove.

Whats the best route for hiking the Nootka?
1) Best is the classic route:
Perhaps even better (though we have not yet done it) is to drive to Tahsis from Gold River, then take a rigid hull inflatable with Tatchu Adventures. They will drop you at Louie Bay (instead of Louis Lagoon) and pick you up in Friendly Cove or wherever you like. Tatchu Adventures provides all groups a VHF handheld Radio while on the Nootka Trail for safety and so you can arrange pick-up at your convenience.
2) A less expensive, less desirable itinerary:
- Uchuck from Gold River to Yuquot (Friendly Cove)
- Hike as far as you like north on Nootka island
- Backtrack to Friendly Cove
- Passenger freighter return to Gold River
