    7. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How much will it cost me?

Costs are estimated in US and / or Canadian dollars. A Canadian dollar was once on par with the US, but in recent years a Canuck buck (called a loonie) was worth about US$.85 — Canada is good value if you are carrying US dollars.

Prices will no doubt go up in future as the Nootka becomes more popular. E-mail if any prices on this web site are incorrect.

In addition to your usual food / gear / accommodation expenses & travel to and from Gold River you also need to budget:

  • Transportation to Nootka Island
  • Transportation from Nootka Island.

The classic route is to fly in, and take the ferry out:

  • Air Nootka float plane one-way — costs
  • Uchuck ferry one-way — costs

If the plane is too expensive for you, take the ferry both directions

Air Nootka has 3 float planes which you can book depending on how many passengers you have. Contact Grant & Lorraine of Air Nootka for specific details. Air Nootka has been accident free since start-up in 1981. We highly recommend them.

You should book your float plane in advance. You probably don’t need to book the Uchuck but you can if you want peace of mind.

In 2001 there was no reservation fee, hiking or camping charge on the Nootka unless you camped at Friendly Cove itself.

As of June 26, 2003 hikers are asked to pay C$40 (yikes!) as a fee for traversing First Nations land (Yuquot No. 1, Tsarksis No. 2 & A-as No. 3), presumably to the Mowachaht Band for development of tourist amenities.

Understandably, some hikers were irked, surprised & confused that season. This new fee includes free camping at Friendly Cove — whether or not you camp there.

Non-hikers arriving by personal boat or plane instead, we understand, pay a landing fee of $10/per person for day use.

Day-trippers on the ferry have a fee included as part of their Uchuck ticket. If you are a hiker who takes the ferry, you pay the hiking fee of $40 as well as the fee included in your Uchuck ticket.

The whole system has been unclear from the start.

If you have questions on these fees, e-mail info@yuquot.ca directly.

Where can I buy / rent gear?

The best gear shop in Canada is MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) — a non-profit organization selling & renting quality gear for the lowest possible price. That’s the best place to start.

The closest MEC to the Nootka is Vancouver, BC.

In Victoria, BC you might try renting from Sports Rent.

You can get a backpack for a week for about C$32, Therm-a-rest C$19, Tent C$50, Sleeping bag C$29, etc.
