    8. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Can I bring children?

Yes. There are no regulations of any kind on the Nootka. It’s not a recognized hike.

But on the West Coast Trail it's not recommended to bring children under age 12. This is a good general rule of thumb.

That said, we have seen serious hikers as young as age 7 on the Nootka, carrying a light pack, having no problems whatsoever. If you want to bring a very experienced hiker younger than age 12, be aware that emergency evacuation is difficult. You’ll be taking a big risk with one who is too young to be making that kind of decision for themselves. Be sure to acquire a marine radio for emergencies if you take children.

Alternately, we would recommend the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. It is excellent for kids.

Can I bring my dog?

The West Coast Trail stopped allowing dogs as too many were injured & had to be carried out by their owners. But, lacking the many ladders of the West Coast Trail, the Nootka is easier for a dog.

John Harlin (Backpacker magazine) took his dog in 2001. The dog twice spotted a bear but, fortunately, there was no confrontation.

If you want to hike with your dog, consider too the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail which allows leashed dogs. It has very well groomed trails.

Can I kayak the Nootka?

This coast is VERY dangerous for kayaking. You need a good deal of coastal experience. Instead we recommend you kayak the nearby Nootka Sound, one of the best kayaking destinations on the west coast. In 2001 we hiked the Nootka in 5 days, then kayaked out of Friendly Cove. The Uchuck delivered our kayaks & gear.

Coincidentally, while hiking the Nootka in 2001, we met the designer of Feathercraft kayaks & his family at First Beach kayaking Nootka Island. They were considering paddling south to Friendly Cove but decided against it when the weather deteriorated. The wind might not have allowed them to get back to their vehicle.

Needless to say, this group had a wealth of expedition kayak experience.

Can I mountain bike the Nootka?

No. You could carry your bike across the Nootka, but you wouldn’t have much time on the bike. It’s far too rugged.

Can I fish on the Nootka?

Yes. We took collapsible fishing poles in 2001. We didn’t catch anything but a native boy landed a huge Cod off the ferry dock in Friendly Cove.

Check with Ralph & September from the Tackle Shop in Gold River to suss the local fishing rules & to pickup a salt water fishing license.
