Do I need a water filter?
We strongly recommend you filter. There is plenty of fresh water on the Nootka but much of it is salty, silty & potentially dirty from logging. On sections of the trail the water is tea (or urine) coloured not a problem, we understand, health-wise. But filtering your water gives you peace of mind.
We collected rain water too, funneling off our tarps. This was the most convenient source of fresh water.

Do I need gaiters?
Even hikers who dont normally wear gaiters wear them on the Nootka. They provide good protection from thick Salal & other bushwhacking hazards.
Keep your long, pants handy too. Wearing shorts in the thick brush will get you scratched & bruised in a hurry on the Nootka.
