What special food should I bring?
No special food is needed. But bring the lightest dehydrated meals possible.
Our advice is to prepare & reserve QUICK meals for stormy days. Anticipate howling winds & horizontal rain? Can you cook under a tarp? Time-consuming meals should be saved until the sun comes out.
Is there parking at the Trailhead?
Theres no secure parking at the wharf where you catch either Air Nootka or the Uchuck ferry. We parked there anyway it seems to be safe though its not enclosed or guarded. Air Nootka told us they've had had no thefts.
We debated whether to leave our valuables in the vehicles or carry the extra, unnecessary weight on the Trail. Perhaps leave your wallet back at the motel for safekeeping. Of course if you do that you should consider leaving your vehicle back at the motel.

Are there toilets on the Nootka?
Many a hiker makes a dash for the flush toilets on the Uchuck as soon as they are allowed on board. (The womens washroom is much nicer, by the way.)
Don't miss the fantastic solar-powered, odourless outhouses in Friendly Cove. Just using one of these loos is a life experience.

Solar-powered outhouse in Friendly Cove
On the trail we saw crude outhouses at Calvin Falls (near the shack) and at Beano Creek.
You could book a night or two at the Nootka Island Wilderness Retreat at Beano Creek & enjoy flush toilets, hot shower & a restaurant meal!
Accept that you will be shitting in the woods
or in the intertidal zone.

Where are the nearest showers?
The Peppercorn campground in Gold River has hot showers which may or may not be hot. Your best bet is the swimming pool complex in Gold River. Soak in the hot tub.
Half way along the Nootka Trail at Beano Creek you could book a night at Nootka Island Wilderness Retreat. Hot showers!
The swimming pool was closed when we came off the Nootka so we drove 2 hours through to the Riptide restaurant in Campbell River. The Riptide has a Laundromat and shower complex. Perfect! We recommend it. (It can get busy with fishermen, though. You may need to lineup in the early evening.)
