Tidal Lagoon to Yuquot (Friendly Cove)

Miles before you get to what's marked as the Tidal Lagoon on the map, Yuquot will appear in the distance.

This section offers a lot of variety; rocky headlands, beaches, and boggy forest.

The Tidal Lagoon looks like a river. This is the waterway most likely to slow you down — if the tide is high, or if it has been raining.

Try to schedule arrival here for lower tides. Wade at the mouth. It’s possible to cross further up the lagoon (we tried a number of different spots) but the mouth seems the best. Don’t go barefoot as broken shells may cut your feet.

Cross the lagoon BEFORE camping. On the north side of the lagoon there are good beach sites. You feel you’ve arrived back at civilization when you reach vacation shacks. Most people camp here, just an hour or so short of Yuquot, as camping is free. You will be charged a camping fee if you go on to Friendly Cove.

The last easy walk into Yuquot is scenic & relaxing. Sometimes you have a choice between coast & forest. The coast is generally easier though there is some nice forest trail too.

En route to catch the Uchuck in the afternoon, arrive early enough to do some sightseeing in Friendly Cove. There is a lot to see.

Check the old graveyard.

It's a great feeling to finally walk into Friendly Cove. You conquered the Nootka — the Savage Coast.
