    6. Safety & Staying Healthy

Mud pits?

We’ve seen hikers who have landed face first in the mud.

To avoid a mud bath yourself the best strategy is to dress properly, put a smile on your face, then stomp right through the middle. Most falls occur when people try to skirt the deepest mud. It is safest to choose the best foot placements regardless of how muddy your feet get.

Stream crossings?

There are a number of significant crossings on the Nootka. The difficulty varies with the tide, rain and the time of the year.

When there is a chance of falling into water unbuckle the waist and chest straps on your pack so you can get out if you slip.

Bring 1 pair of footwear for wading. Old light running shoes are best but most hikers use TEVA-style sandals. Cross first without your pack to check the route. A walking stick or hiking pole is useful for balance.

If you are nervous, ask a more confident hiker to carry your pack. A group is safest walking across together, elbows linked.

Stay alert. Most slips happen in shallow water when your attention is diverted.

Do the creeks flood?

Yes indeed. In 2001 we hiked in steady rain over 4 days. The creeks seemed to rise hourly. The tide is a big factor too. We managed to cross all but the Tidal Lagoon. Map. That one held us up for a long lunch until the tide began to drop.

Flash floods can make creek crossings dangerous. Wait if you aren't sure you can make it. Poor weather or incoming tide can halt your progress as well. Better safe than sorry.

Remember — always camp on the FAR side of the creek (closer to your destination) if there is any chance the water will rise overnight. We saw one couple almost trapped on the wrong side of Beano Creek. Map. The water level increase overnight at Beano was amazing!
