Why?

    Details, Transportation, Accommodation

Water

Coming from Canada, for us the clean, clear water of Paine was a treat. No giardia.

We almost never treated water over 9 days. No problem.

Be sure to draw water from as far upstream as possible.

Campsites

The campsites are not as good as you might expect; often it is difficult to get a flat spot. Don't plan on solitude. Campsites are quite crowded in high season.

Best are the free hot showers — available at the pay campsites.

Shelter from wind & rain is your highest priority. You will probably want the protection of a site in the trees. (We tie the tent down to the trees!)

Best campsites? Our favourites in 2004 included:

  • Dickson $ (well managed, lovely location)
  • Refugio Grey $ (nice sites by the beach, amazing day hikes to the Glacier)
  • Albergue Los Cuernos $ (great views, friendly staff, but poor tent sites)

E-mail us with your own favourite.

Worst campsites?

None are so bad that we would recommend you avoid them. But many are dark under trees (sheltered from the wind) & poorly maintained.

Cooking

All cooking should be done on a lightweight camping stove. Bring a back-up stove if possible, in case your primary stove breaks down.

Meals should be as simple & quick-cooking as possible. Instant mashed potatoes are a staple in South America. We rehydrate in soup rather than water.
