Should I hike the W instead?
More than half of Paine hikers think so.
The W (in red) is shorter, easier yet still includes most of the highlights of the Circuit. Details.
But if you can possibly afford the time, do the whole Circuit. We were glad we did.
Should I hike Fitz Roy instead?
No. Paine is a far better hike.
Fitz Roy in Argentina is the second most popular hiking area in Patagonia. If you possibly can, make the bus trip to El Calafate to visit both Fitz Roy & the Moreno Glacier.
But not at the expense of Paine which is, arguably, the best hike in South America. (Or is Huayhuash in Peru better?)
When should I hike Paine?
The best time to hike is during late Spring, Summer or early Fall in South America late November through March.
We hiked early December and had no problems. In January & early February the campsites are uncomfortably crowded.
Should I hike off-season?
In the winter, expect snow especially on John Garner pass.
On the other hand, the near constant winds settle down between May & September. The Park is almost completely depopulated. (Sounds great to us!)
Hiking is cold but still doable because of the moderating oceans nearby.
Is the weather as bad as they say?
Yes. If you want great weather, go elsewhere.
For us, managing the horrible climate is part of the challenge of Paine. We have never changed clothing layers more often in a day, anywhere.
Wind is the main concern in summer; a nuisance & even a danger!
Many hikers have never experienced gusts like this. We met some who were thrown to the ground. Backpack covers were ripped off & flew away like helium balloons. Tents were flattened.
In winter, snow is the main worry. Temperatures can fall below zero Celsius any month of the year. Bring gear for minus 15 to be on the safe side.
Precipitation is not as severe as you might expect. Some sections of the Circuit are in the wind shadow of the mountains. They are actually dry.
But prepare for serious rain every day. That way, when the sun comes out, if feels like a miracle.
The mean summer temperature is 11 C (52 F) with a minimum of 0 C (33 F) and a maximum of 24 C (75 F).
