Why?

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Should I bring a GPS?

No, not necessary. Bring it for fun, if you like.

What special gear should I bring?

Hat & sun screen are essential. Many are sunburned on this long hike, much of which is exposed. Recall that the ozone layer is thin in the southern hemisphere.

In these winds, a 4 season tent would be great. (We had light 3 season tents.)

Don’t forget:

  • sunglasses
  • toilet paper
  • waterproof jacket
  • sufficiently warm clothing to -15 Celsius
  • lip protection from sun and wind
  • alarm clock (to wake for dawn at the Paine lookout)
  • disinfectant alcohol gel

We recommend disinfectant gel (sometimes called instant hand sanitizer) which you use to clean your hands before snack breaks & after toilet stops in the woods. Alcohol gel is essential hiking gear.

Stove fuel for almost any stove system can be purchased in Puerto Natales. Do not fly with it, obviously.

Peruse our general hiking gear checklist.

What footwear is best for Paine?

You want to wear what fits you best & what works for you. No blisters!

Most experts recommend hiking boots. Modern boots are remarkably light & comfortable. A pair of good boots & gaiters make you feel invincible in mud & scree.

Bring a light second pair of footwear for evenings. Best if they can be used too for wading shallow creeks — a number of which are inevitable on the Circuit.

Do I need a water filter?

No. We are happy to report that most water on the Circuit is potable. No giardia yet in Paine.

In December 2004 we heard no reports of stomach problems from water.

Can I fish on the Paine Circuit?

Yes, though we saw no fishers when we were there. Worse, we saw no fish rising on any of the many waterways.

Apparently the fishing is better on the park periphery away from the milky, glacier-fed waters. Rio Serrano, only 20 minutes walk from Park Headquarters, has rainbow trout and salmon.

We understand the catch limit is 3 fish / day to anglers who have the proper (expensive) licence which can be purchased in Puerto Natales.
