Why?

      Recommended Routes

Plan on a minimum of 6 nights, 7 days for this adventure if you are acclimatized already to altitude. (You probably will be if you spend some time in Cuzco (3326m) in advance of the hike.)

We feel the best itinerary is 3 or 4 nights tenting on the Trek, then 2 nights in Aguas Calientes town while you visit Machu Picchu.

Note: Our route is quite different than that of Lonely Planet Trekking in the Central Andes which adds at least one more day. Check that guide book, as well.

Two main options:

1) If you are acclimatized to altitude already.

2) If you are not acclimatized to altitude.

Most hikers these days are choosing option 1.

Understand that the Salcantay is very remote. If you are stricken with altitude sickness on the Pass you must head downhill on your own. Do not count on anyone being able to carry you.

option 1) If you are acclimatized to altitude.

night 0 = Cuzco
... next morning bus to Mollepata, truck to Soraypampa

night 1= anywhere before Salcantay Pass
...
close to the huge moraine wall offers best protection
... pass is 4700m

night 2 = hotsprings down hill past Colpapampa
... most hikers stay in Colpapampa. Hotsprings are even better.
... this is the longest & most difficult day
.

night 3= La Playa
... small town with limited road access. Careful of your gear here.
... many hikers catch a truck to the town of Santa Teresa. But much better is to hike to Llactapata instead.

night 4 = Llactapata
... lovely remote campsite with views to Machu Picchu
... catch train next day for 9km, or walk to Aguas Calientes

night 5 = Aguas Calientes
... visit Machu Picchu early next morning

night 6 = Aguas Calientes
... catch train out to Cuzco or Ollantaytambo next day

option 2) If you are not acclimatized to altitude.

night 0 = Cuzco (3326m)
... next morning bus to Mollepata, hike towards Soraypampa

night 1 = Cruz Pata (3500m)
... follow the road, or ask local advice on the best paths
... Cruz Pata is also called Marcocasa. Look for 2 huge crosses.

night 2= anywhere before Salcantay Pass
...
close to the huge moraine wall offers best protection
... pass is 4700m
... this is the longest & most difficult day.

night 3 = hotsprings down hill past Colpapampa
... most hikers stay in Colpapampa. Hotsprings are even better.

night 4= La Playa
... small town with limited road access. Watch your gear here.
... many hikers catch a truck to the town of Santa Teresa. But much better is to hike to Llactapata instead.

night 5 = Llactapata
... lovely remote campsite with views to Machu Picchu
... catch train next day for 9km, or walk to Aguas Calientes

night 6 = Aguas Calientes (under 2000m)
... visit Machu Picchu (2350m) early next morning

night 7 = Aguas Calientes
... catch train out to Cuzco or Ollantaytambo next day
