FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)How many days are needed?Our recommended route is 4 days, 3 nights in the tent. Most hikers follow this itinerary. Better would be to bring food for an extra day — just in case you want to add sidetrips. There are some tempting options! You could rush through in 3 days, 2 night, if in a hurry. Unbelievably, one guide told us that mule drivers sometimes do the 50km in one day, running behind the animals, not eating, just chewing coca leaf. Does Peru have internet access?It certainly does. Inexpensive, convenient & reasonably high speed service is available almost everywhere — even tiny mountain towns. Hikers are spending more time on-line in recent years, uploading digital pictures to services like Yahoo photos & Ofoto.com What guidebooks do you recommend?
We strongly recommend you use this book to plan your trip but it is not essential to carry it on the trail. We photocopy just the pages we needed. The next best guidebook is the classic Bradt guide, already in 8th edition in 2005. You also need a general travel guide — check our details page for recommendation. What is the best map?Alpenvereinskarte, Cordilleras Blanca Nord Peru was the best map in 2004. More information and a listing of on-line maps on our Map page. Do I need to speak Spanish?It would help. The two official languages of Peru are Spanish & Quechua (the Inca language). Actually you can survive Santa Cruz without Spanish.
